Champions need the most food - 4 per champion but they offer (I think) the best all round performance - on a like for like basis they're the toughest attackers, fastest speed and best defenders which is why they cost more food. Upgrade food as much as is possible and you could have 8-10000+ in 1 village which will be enough to win an attack 99% of the time and enough to stop any attacks against you.
